It’s September, which means that soon everyone in the Greater Kansas City Area will flock to the Country Club Plaza for the annual Plaza Art Fair. It’s an enduring tradition that kicks off autumn in KC. The Plaza Art Fair, which takes place on the weekend of the 19th to the 21st, is a national cultural event that attracts over 200 artists from around the country and crowds of spectators topping 250,000. The fair features an incredible array of original art in every medium imaginable: painting, metalwork, glass, mixed media, and more.
This marks the festival’s 83rd year. It all started in 1932 when the Depression had driven many companies out of business and wrought havoc on local economies. The Plaza fought back by hosting an art fair to bring more customers to the area—and celebrate art, of course. At the beginning, it was a small gathering in a vacant lot with only 90 artists selling their paintings for as little as a dollar apiece. The event was a huge success that brought artists and community members together. It has continued on, growing each year and becoming even more dynamic. This year’s art fair will encompass nine city blocks.
KC’s biggest art fair doesn’t just feature art. It’s also a well-known culinary event with an array of excellent local restaurants offering special menu items for art fair attendees. Enjoy delectable seafood from McCormick & Schmicks, gourmet tacos from Chuy’s, fusion street fare from the Kona Grill, and much more. There are plenty of outdoor dining areas where patrons can gather for meals and drinks.
In addition to art and food, the art fair boasts three stages with live music from local bands. Many of Kansas City’s favorite musicians are on the lineup. They’ll be playing during the afternoon and into the evening hours.
The Country Club Plaza Art Fair begins on Friday evening and lasts all weekend. You’ll be amazed at all there is to see and do. Come on down and enjoy a night of dinner, drinks, and a stroll among the booths—then stop at one of the live music stages to take in a few sets.
But as the art fair has grown, so have the crowds! The parking situation is notoriously bad, and it’s difficult to find anything near the event without paying exorbitant parking fees. Don’t spend your otherwise lovely evening fighting through traffic and hunting for a parking spot. Book a chauffeur-driven luxury sedan or SUV to cut right through the mayhem and be dropped off at just the right location.
Chauffeur-driven luxury sedans comfortably seat 2-3 people, while SUV’s accommodate up to 6 people. If you’re attending the art fair with friends and family, book one of our new 2500 Series Extended Mercedes Limo Sprinter, our new 2015 Ford Transit Vans or one of our Executive Van Terra’s—these spaciously accommodate 10-12 passengers .
